The Mother of God and the Christ Child are shown close together, their faces turned toward the one who prays. The letters ΜΡ ΘΥ abbreviate the Greek Μήτηρ Θεοῦ, Mother of God, the title given to Mary at the Council of Ephesus in 431.
Around them, the gold does not describe a place: it evokes the light of the Kingdom in which they are already present.
