The first icon
“Looking back, I like to think that perhaps he had chosen me before I even knew it.”
Having always been drawn to art and drawing, after studies in history and years as a primary school teacher, I trained in illustration and graphic design before discovering Christian iconography in 2024. It was a pivotal encounter.
Iconography
A wooden board, covered with linen and many thin layers of gesso, sanded smooth.
The figure is traced following the canon of the tradition, then lightly incised.
Gold leaf is laid on the halo and ground. It stands for the light of the heavenly world.
Pigments bound with egg yolk, from the darkest tones up to the last highlights.
The name of the saint is written on the icon, which is then varnished.
Commission an icon
A patron saint for a baptism, a guardian angel for a godchild, the Holy Family for a marriage. Each icon is written by hand, to order, over several weeks.
